Windows Auto Logon
The most common and practical reason for doing this is to be able to have two user acounts, one the administrator and the other a regular user. The regular user logs in automatically but does not have many priviledges, it cannot install or uninstall applications or perform other administrative tasks. If your surfing the internet as an administrator and your computer is comprimised whoeverhas gained access to your computer can then perform administrative tasks. Meaning the attacker can install malicious software, edit or curropt your system files or do just about any other administrative task they desire. However if your logged in as an unpriviledged user they are bound by the same limitations. Even if your computer has no internet access, anyone that sits at your computer while you have left for a few minutes or hours or days also has those priviledges (your children or someone who has snuck into your house for example). For these reasons it is much safer to log in as an unpriviledged user for most of your computing activities.
Unfortunately, once you configure users this way you find there is no obvious way to set your computer to automatically login as the unpriviledged user. But it can be done....
open run dialog from the start menu
type "control userpasswords2"
uncheck the users must enter password to logon field
click apply button
set the username and password you want to autologin
The next time you log in you should be conviently logged in to your computer as an upriviledged user and feel much safer surfing the web or leaving your computer unattended (although it is still not recommended that you leave your computer unattended). Take note that if you want to install a program there is a "run as administrator" option in the right click menu, choose this option to install a program as an unpriviledged user, you will be prompted for the administrator password. If you need to actually log in as the administrator click the start menu and select the switch user option, you will be taken to the login screen and have the option to select administrator.
