Windows Network Printing
Installing local and network printers in Windows XP
Although this is written primarily for Windows XP most versions of Windows operate in a similar fashion.
These instructions will likely work with most Windows systems with only slight variances.
Access the printers and faxes section through either the control panel or the start menu.
Click the add printer button and then next button in the printer setup wizard.
For a local printer attached directly to the computer choose the Local printer option.
You can try the automatic option but if that fails uncheck the auto box and hit next.
If its connected through a parallel port it should be LPT1 unless your computer has multiple ports.
After you hit the next button their should be a list of manufacturers.
If your printers manufacturer is not in the list or the installation fails you will need a driver.
If the printer is new you should have a disk for it.
Whether you have a disk or a downloaded file choose the have disk option.
Browse to the disk or the folder containing the driver and click ok.
To install a network printer choose the network printer option instead of the local printer option.
To set up a network printer it must be shared.
To share a printer go to the icon for the printer you want to share (in printers and faxes).
Right click on the printer icon and select properties.
On the properties box there should be a sharing tab.
Click the box that says share this printer.
You should also have to list a share name for the printer.
The printer may come up in the list if you try the browse for a printer option.
If not then select the Connect to this printer option.
In the space provided type;
\\computer_name\printer_name
This is called the universal naming convention.
"computer_name" is the name of the computer that the printer is directly attached to.
"printer_name" is the share name of the printer.
To get the computer name go to the computer the printer is attached to and access the system properties tab.
You can access the system properties tab through the control panel icon or by right clicking on the "My Computer" icon.
There is a computer name tab in the system properties menu that will show the exact computer name.
Use the exact computer name for the universal naming convention.
Use the exact share name specified for that printer.
To view the share name go to the computer that the printer is attached to.
Go to printers and faxes and right click on the printer icon.
Open the properties dialog box and select the sharing tab.
The share name should be listed on this tab.
If the printer is not shared you will not be able to access it from any other computers on the network.
After entering the universal naming convention hit the next button.
If these steps were done correctly the printer wizard should install the printer without problems.
After completion you may wish to set the printer as the default printer.
If there is no default printer set you will not be able to print unless you specify a printer to print from.
Also keep in mind that the computer the printer is attached to will have to be turned on in order to print.
